Welcome back to Fresh Roasted Coffee's monthly Sustainability Report!
Across the month, the solar array at our Sunbury, Pennsylvania facility produced 107.97 MWh of renewable energy, making July another strong summer month for the system that has been helping power our operation since late 2024.
We roasted 219,420 pounds of coffee in July, with our fleet of energy efficient Loring Smart Roasters helping us dramatically reduce the emissions associated with roasting all of it.
Put those two pieces together, and July added up to an estimated 88.27 U.S. tons of CO₂ impact through renewable energy production and cleaner roasting.
Summer is where our rooftop solar array gets a chance to stretch its legs.
In July, the system generated 107.97 MWh of renewable energy. Using our standard emissions conversion, that represents approximately 75.86 U.S. tons of CO₂ impact from renewable energy production.
For comparison, 107.97 megawatt-hours (MWh) of energy would
We used the EPA’s 2022 national average emissions factor of ~1405 lbs CO₂ per MWh, to determine that our facility avoided 75.86 U.S. tons of CO₂ emissions by using a renewable energy source for power.
Solar power is only one part of the equation.
During July, our roasting team produced 219,420 pounds of coffee using our fleet of Loring Smart Roasters.
Loring roasting technology uses significantly less energy than traditional roasting systems, helping reduce the emissions associated with one of the most energy intensive parts of coffee production.
Based on our established calculation method, July's roasting volume represents approximately 12.40 U.S. tons of CO₂ impact through cleaner roasting technology.
That means the two efforts combined for approximately 88.27 U.S. tons of CO₂ impact during July alone.
For comparison, that equals
There is no single piece of equipment or one big decision that makes a coffee company sustainable.
It is the accumulation of choices.
It is producing our own renewable energy. It is investing in more efficient roasting technology. It is paying attention to how much energy we use, how we package coffee, how we source it, and where we can continue improving.
July was another reminder of what those choices can add up to.
- 107,969 kWh of solar energy.
- 219,420 pounds of coffee roasted.
- An estimated 88.27 U.S. tons of CO₂ impact.
And then we start again next month.
