Summer may have been winding down in August, but there was still plenty happening on the roof and inside our roastery.
Our solar array generated 96.780 MWh of renewable electricity throughout the month, while our roasting team produced 198,559 pounds of coffee using our fleet of energy efficient Loring Smart Roasters.
Together, those efforts represent an estimated 79.23 U.S. tons of CO₂ impact during August.
Not bad for one month of making coffee.
Our 1,310-panel solar array continues to supply renewable energy directly to our Sunbury, Pennsylvania facility, helping offset electricity that would otherwise need to come from the grid.
During August, the array produced 96.780 MWh of electricity.
Using our standard emissions calculation, that production represents approximately 68.00 U.S. tons of CO₂ impact.
We used the EPA’s 2022 national average emissions factor of ~1405 lbs CO₂ per MWh, to determine that our facility avoided 75.86 U.S. tons of CO₂ emissions by using a renewable energy source for power.
Meanwhile, inside the building, August brought another 198,559 pounds of roasted coffee through our production operation.
Our Loring Smart Roasters are designed to use substantially less energy than traditional roasting systems. That efficiency matters when coffee is being roasted hundreds of thousands of pounds at a time.
For August, the emissions reduction associated with cleaner roasting represents approximately 11.22 U.S. tons of CO₂ impact.
Combined with our solar production, that brings August's estimated total to 79.23 U.S. tons.
For comparison, that equals
Sustainability is rarely about one dramatic change.
Most of the time, it looks much less exciting than that.
It looks like solar panels quietly producing electricity every day. More efficient roasters running batch after batch. Teams tracking production numbers, energy use, packaging, sourcing, and the dozens of other decisions that come with producing coffee at scale.
Then, at the end of the month, we get to step back and see what those decisions added up to.
For August, that was:
- 96.78 MWh of renewable energy.
- 198,559 pounds of coffee roasted.
- An estimated 79.23 U.S. tons of CO₂ impact.
Here's to another fantastic month. Bring on September!
