Working in the coffee industry has allowed me to sample some of the best coffees in the world. However, no matter how delicious and special these coffees may be, how they are brewed can completely alter the delicate flavor profiles and hard earned roasting notes we strive to maintain.
Recently, Fresh Roasted Coffee began using Chemex pour over brewers for our in-house tastings and these wonderful devices have completely changed how I feel about making a cup of coffee. Here's a few reasons why I think Chemex is brew-ti-ful.
1)If you love coffee, one of the most exciting parts about brewing is getting to enjoy the show. The Chemex is a clear glass vessel that gives you a perfect window to watch your coffee brew. The anticipation that comes with watching the drip fill the Chemex is beyond words.
This blurb from the Chemex website says it allThe Chemex® coffeemaker is an elegant, one-piece, hourglass shaped vessel made of high quality, heat resistant glass. The traditional model comes to you with a polished wood collar and leather tie. The collar serves as an insulated handle around the middle of the coffeemaker.”
2) The Chemex filter is up to 30% thicker than other filters on the market. The thickness of the filter and the material it’s made from collects even the finest amount of sediment from leaking into the coffee. The thickness allows for the perfect amount of water to steadily infuse with the grinds leaving you with a perfect balance of coffee and water time after time. Also, it blocks undesirable fats and oils from reaching your brew, which allows for a much cleaner taste.
3) You’ve got options. The Chemex comes in varying shapes and sizes so everyone can find their perfect fit. I prefer the glass handle version because I feel as though it gives me better pour control (my hands are smaller and gripping the wood collar proves to be more difficult) but both versions give spectacular results.
All in all, I’ve had some of the most well proportioned, delicious cups of coffee ever in this gorgeous brewing device.
